Formal training

Orientation

The most intensive formal training occurs during a new hire's first few months at BCG. Following orientation in their local offices, new E&SA recruits convene for a week-long regional orientation program in Sydney, Bangkok or Singapore.

Regional orientation training is designed to provide new hires with the core consulting skills they need for their first year at BCG. This is a lot to learn in one week, which is why regional orientation was originally known as 'boot camp'. But the days of intensive learning are now balanced by nights of intensive fun, in which new hires in the region get to know each other over drinks at dinner, shopping, or even a round of Go-Kart. For the last few days of this program, new hires participate in a simulated case that provides a fun and challenging introduction to the project team environment.

After orientation, our consultants attend annual regional and/or global training, supplemented by local office programs every 1-2 months. Classroom training is complemented by e-learning, especially during the first year. For example, new hires who have no background in business are invited to participate in our Finance Online Training for 6 weeks, where they are taught essential skills in Accounting and Finance. Basic analytical skills are learned through multimedia, interactive, on-line 'eModules'. In addition, ‘on-demand’ training is available through a number of interactive PowerPoint 'ePrimers' on a broad range of topics. Every two weeks, ‘virtual classrooms’ led by topic experts from all Practice Areas around the world bring the latest ideas and breakthroughs to our consultants’ doorsteps. BCG also offers a training library of self-study videos, books and CDs, as well as a range of materials on our global Knowledge Management database.

Finally, our consultants will tell you that the most powerful learning invariably happens on the job.
