Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Who is BCG?
The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is a leading management consulting firm. We provide strategic advice to the senior management of leading companies around the world.

What skills and characteristics is BCG looking for in its people?
BCG looks for people with academic results in the top 5-10% of their year, as well as work experience and extra curricular activities that indicate drive and motivation. We also require superior communication and analytical skills, along with the will to succeed.

Do I need a business-focused undergraduate or postgraduate degree to join BCG?
No, we employ people from a wide range of disciplines, including arts, medicine and engineering, as well as traditional business-focused disciplines.

What is a typical career path for someone who has just completed an undergraduate degree and joins BCG?
An undergraduate joins BCG as an Associate. After 2 years, outstanding Associates are promoted to Senior Associates and given the opportunity to undertake a BCG-sponsored MBA. On their return, they are typically promoted to Consultants. Promotion to Project Leader, Principal and Partner and Managing Director then occur at approximately 2-3 year intervals.

What type of work will I do in my first year or two at BCG?
Associates/Consultants typically spend time analyzing data and preparing materials to support the communication of this analysis. Case work may involve researching industry trends and interviewing client managers; it will always include contributing to team meetings.

When is BCG recruiting this year?
Our major campaign for undergraduates, postgraduates and MBA students begins in September each year. Successful candidates generally start work the following year. We also welcome applications for positions at BCG throughout the year.

How do I apply for a position with BCG?
Please prepare an application including a covering letter, and a copy of your résumé and academic transcript. Send this to your preferred office through online application of our global website. We will acknowledge receipt of your application and inform you of its progress.

What is the interview process for BCG, and how can I get tips to help me?
Our interviewing process consists of two to three rounds, each comprising two interviews. A typical interview includes several questions based on your résumé, followed by a case study. The case study involves a business problem that will give you a flavor of the work we do. Please see our global website for tips on interview preparation.

If I join BCG, will I get an opportunity to travel?
Yes, successful candidates have numerous opportunities to travel. They vary from casework in another area or country, where you fly home on weekends, to a 12-month transfer to one of our international offices.

I've heard that management consulting is stressful. What is the downside?
Clients come first in our business and thus we often face long hours and demanding travel schedules to meet their needs (Management consulting is not a nine-to-five job!). The work we do also involves significant ambiguity and can be incredibly challenging. However, we recognize the effort consultants put into their work and reward them accordingly.
