Our client, a Taiwan-based life-insurer, part of a large financial holding company, was losing market share and profitability. We were asked to conduct a diagnosis of its entire operations. After assessing the situation, the team produced an improvement plan that stressed, among other things, the importance of strengthening the client's Asset Management function. We were then asked to undertake a follow-up project to address the issues identified in the diagnosis. The joint BCG-client team designed and established a new Asset Management function headed by a Chief Investment Officer. BCG supported the client in selecting and coordinating with an executive search firm to staff the position. We also introduced best practice asset liability management and portfolio management concepts, techniques, and tools. We also helped the client to rationalize its overseas investment operations, which yielded immediate tangible benefits. Almost three years later, our client is a leader in Asset Management in Taiwan, and was recently named ’Institutional Investor of the Year’ by a reputable industry publication.
